One of the best ways for leaders to accelerate their development is by having multiple channels to gain self-awareness and experiment with new approaches while receiving support and feedback over time. Many leaders turn to coaching to meet this need.
Sometimes that coaching is informal, where the leader connects with peers to
get ideas or support for a specific challenge. While valuable, this approach requires disciplined engagement and can also lead to simply gaining advice for an immediate issue rather than stretching the leaders’ thinking or way of engaging more holistically.
Other times, coaching is formal, where a professional coach works one-on-one with the leader to bring process and expertise. In this case, development is more focused but does not have the benefit of comparison with and support from peers.
The Executive Success program brings together a multi-modal approach to coaching, where development is concentrated by reaping the benefits of different types of coaching, expertly combined. It can be an intensive experience, but the rewards in terms of rapid growth and learning make it pay off.
Individual Coaching
Working with a professionally trained executive coach brings several benefits, including a disciplined process to guide development as well as the coach’s expertise and resources that can accelerate learning. The coach can facilitate interpretation of assessment feedback, guide the creation of goals for success, and formulate plans to get there. The coach can also help the leader expand their thinking and provide the type of supported challenge that promotes leadership growth.
Group Coaching
One question leaders often ask their coach is:, “Do other leaders struggle with the same thing I am?” Adding a group coaching element lets leaders see what challenges other leaders face and how they are tackling them. They develop broader perspectives on their challenges and opportunities as well as supportive relationships with a small group of peers. In addition, the leaders learn skills of giving feedback and coaching peers in a safe forum by seeing it modeled and have support to connect their individual goals to topics explored by the group. They benefit from a variety of perspectives and contribute to other leaders’ growth.
Peer Coaching
Adding a peer coaching component gives the leader yet another pathway for learning and application. Partnering one-on-one with a peer allows for the development of empathy, encouragement, and accountability for each leader’s learning journey. Empathy can be a powerful tool to build up the confidence needed to push the envelope on the comfort zone and expand capabilities.
By bringing these three coaching modalities together into one program, the Executive Success programs create a focused and intensive learning experience that is difficult to replicate through one coaching modality alone. Getting the most out of such a program requires a leader who is ready for a challenge of rapid learning and willing to support the growth of other leaders.
